Hervey Bay is home to a large number of pelicans and you will often find them resting on the beach. While they are certainly not tame they are comfortable around humans and you can approach them.
If you happen to be fishing on the beach just watch your bait bucket because most pelicans will help themselves while you're not looking.
It is not legal to feed the pelicans in Hervey Bay so you shouldn't even try ... but then these intelligent birds really don't need your help to remain well-fed.
