So you're thinking of coming to Hervey Bay but you're not sure of the best way to get here? Well thousands of people come to Hervey Bay every year so I can assure you that getting here isn't hard.

You can get to Hervey Bay by car, bus, train, air ... and even by sea if you want to be a little different.

Air

Three major airlines service Hervey Bay with direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

If you're starting point is Sydney then Virgin Blue has a direct flight from Sydney every day of the week. Fares vary but Virgin Blue is very reliable and their daily flight arrives in Hervey Bay at 12.25pm.

If you're starting point is Melbourne then Jetstar has a direct flight from Melbourne. The days that the flights operate on does vary and so does the time of arrival so if you're coming to Hervey Bay from Melbourne be sure to check with Jetstar to see which days their flights operate.

And a tip for the unwary - if you fly Jetstar always be sure that you've checked in at the airport well in advance of the advertised departure time.

If you're starting point is Brisbane then Qantas Link has you covered every day of the week and with a number of flights every day. If you plan your trip with a little care you can actually fly into Hervey Bay in the morning, conduct the business you might have here and then be back in Brisbane around dinner time. Top

Car

Travelling by car to Hervey Bay is quite simple. Hervey Bay is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours drive north of Brisbane. You leave Brisbane on the Bruce Highway and stay on that highway until you reach Maryborough.

From Maryborough it's simply a matter of following the signs and allowing 30 to 40 minutes for the trip from Maryborough to Hervey Bay.

If you're travelling from Brisbane then it's recommended that you fill your fuel tank in the northern suburbs because the price of fuel does rise the closer you get to Hervey Bay.

Travelling to Hervey Bay from the north of the state is just as simple. All you have to do is follow the Bruce Highway south until you see signs directing you to Hervey Bay.

The first signs will take you through the small town of Howard and from then on the route you need to take is clearly sign-posted. Top

Bus

You can travel to Hervey Bay from Brisbane or from the north of the state by road coach. Greyhound has a number of coaches running through Hervey Bay at various times every day.

However, not all of the Greyhound coach services are direct and some do wander off to places like Rainbow Beach on their trips north and south. So, unless you want to take the scenic route to Hervey Bay be sure to check on which buses operate on the direct route. Top

Train

Queensland Railways operate daily services into Hervey Bay from Brisbane and from the north of the state. They do that despite the fact that the railway line into Hervey Bay was closed around 14 years ago.

To achieve the seemingly impossible Queensland Rail have an airconditioned coach that meets the the north and southbound trains at Maryborough and conveys passengers to Hervey Bay. The train service is quite popular and bookings are essential. Top

Travelling Around Hervey Bay

Once you're here in Hervey Bay travelling around the city is also quite simple. There are regular bus services connecting most parts of the city and catering for tourists along the beach front. There is a small fleet of taxis and an inexpensive limousine service too.

Both the RSL and Boat Club have a small fleet of courtesy buses to pick you up from your accomodation if you want to visit one of the clubs and they'll also take you home again.

All major and several of the smaller car rental companies have offices here but rental cars are always in demand so it's advisable to book well in advance of your visit.

Bike hire and motor scooter hire is also available on a daily basis here in Hervey Bay and they are a great way to get around and see the sights.

If you fly into Hervey Bay and don't wish to hire a car there is an airport shuttle bus that will bring you in from the airport and drop you at your accommodation. On your return journey it will also pick you up from your accommodation and take you out to the airport. Top
